
However, if you're going to boost the benefits of those games, you're also going to have to be subject to comparative scrutiny - and it's here where Ghost Rider's flame starts to die out. These are all good things in my book, and make Ghost Rider a better game than it appeared in my mind's eye before I played it. Unlocking new combos or status upgrades is available early and often - to the point where you can just pause the action and fill up on goodness. I did find switching targets mid-combo to be a little tougher on PSP, and I miss the analog evasion roll. At the same time, one could just button-mash his or her way through the whole thing with ignorant bliss. The combat is deep, with many moves that take advantage of the two attack buttons, blocking, throwing, and jumping mechanics. In many ways, Ghost Rider lifts some really good aspects of these titles. If you're going to "borrow" from two action games, I really can't think of any better - especially since GTA derivatives have become as plentiful as mosquitoes in a swamp. Now, of course, the fact that neither of those franchises has ever appeared on PlayStation Portable gives this version a little more leeway. You may think of Devil May Cry, but again Ghost Rider tries to squeeze into that same mold. Now, imagine a dark, brooding button-masher with linear travel, large bosses to break down, and a combat ranking system. What game came to mind? God of War, right? Obviously, but Ghost Rider would also be an acceptable answer. Picture a game where the protagonist shoots chained blades out of his hands in a flurry of combat combos against a horde of foes, capped by some visceral finishing moves. Unlike the basically immortal main character, Ghost Rider lives and dies by its uncanny resemblance to some of the action genre's best games.
